What a gorgeous property! For me, it’s love at first sight when I looked at the photos of Clay Hill Ranch, a 4,600-plus-acre tract in Freestone County, southeast of Dallas. Marketed by Hortenstine Ranch Company for $17.5 million, it’s the largest ranch in Freestone, and bigger than any other continuous property in the surrounding area.
Besides being gorgeous with excellent hay pastures and some of the best hunting around, this ranch has a colorful history:
The ranch has a deep history dating back to the late 1800′s where an old moonshiner lived in an old cabin off a natural spring where he produced moonshine. The moonshiner eventually had a run in with law enforcement during the prohibition days and a shoot-out occurred in front of the cabin. The old whiskey maker shot and killed two law enforcement officers and later the moonshiner was killed as well. The cabin remains intact today but left mainly in its natural state for guests to walk back in time while imagining the scenes of the past.
Wow, right? Besides the Moonshiner Cabin, there’s also a fabulous lodge completed in 2011. The lodge, which has five bedrooms and four and a half baths, has top-of-the-line fixtures and interiors, as well as an adjoining 820-square-foot guest quarters.
