Oscar Time: My “Visit” to Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s Sky Garage

Where do Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban live in New York City? In the one and only Sky Garage.

Nominated this year for Best Actress in “Rabbit Hole”, Nicole Kidman and her Grammy award winning husband, Keith Urban, actually have a multitude of homes — including a contemporary knock-out in Beverly Hills and a 10,925 square foot Nashville, TN southern mansion with seven bedrooms, eight full and two half baths. But they paid a cool $10,000,000 for this Annabelle Selldorf creation with garages that crank up to your penthouse. Why not? Nicole is the highest-paid actress in the motion picture industry.

The 19-story building at 200 Eleventh Avenue, which I toured this summer,  is nicknamed Sky Garage because of the  auto elevator/garage  that allows residents to drive in, hop the lift and park their cars on their own floors, right next to their town home. The units are two stories each. It is likely the only such high rise with an auto elevator in this country.

If you don’t have a car, you can use the garage space as storage or a studio. If you have a driver, as many celebs do, you can also get dropped off at your door and the driver can take the lift back down and drive off. What celebs love most about this place is they can drive in discreetly right off Tenth Avenue and never seen seen.

The unique structure has German engineering and clean design all over it — designed by “starchitect” Annabelle Selldorf; sales were launched in 2007. Further proof that Manhattan is becoming an isle of zillionaires: only one is left. Two penthouses were purchased by designer Domenico Dolce of Dolce & Gabbana for a reported $29 million last year and I saw all the stuff they are tearing out of the units they are re-doing. (Anyone need a great $25,000 bathtub?)  Other owners include celebrity designer Jamie Drake, and two high-profile musicians.

$5.95 million is the asking price for the last available unit at the Sky Garage.

The last available unit, No. 5S, is listed by Leonard Steinberg of Prudential Douglas Elliman. Steinberg has not only marketed the development but are you ready for this — he used to live and work in Dallas with designer Victor Costa. Below you can see how the sky-garage integrates into the home, and also see the kitchen with foldin doors and huge fold-down wood island, same as in Kidman’s unit.

Now that is a cool idea, but it looks like the car get's more space than the kitchen. But if you have that much money maybe you don't need a kitchen.
