When you envision the interiors of your second home, you might gravitate toward relaxing color schemes and open spaces with comfortable furniture. It should be a space for relaxing and letting go. A space for enjoyment, not practicality.
Not everyone has the talent to create that kind of space, nor the time. That’s why Sean Kanan, a renowned daytime TV star, enlisted Dallas-based veteran designer Kathy Fielder to create the perfect environment for his vacation home in Palm Springs.
“The combinations that Kathy put together echo my taste,” Kanan said. “She utilized a combination of bold patterns with solids all within a neutral palette that I love.”
But how do you achieve that look without succumbing to design ennui? We asked Kathy for a few tips on designing the perfect spaces for your vacation home.
“The key to designing a space well for your client is listening and reading between the lines,” Fielder said. “I always ask for a few visual images that inspire, and I like for the client to describe the space verbally to me. This is always helpful since this will usually tell me how they truly want the space to function and the end result they have in mind.”
Kanan and his wife, Michelle, wanted a space to relax and unwind during weekend getaways, so Fielder picked out colors and textures that spoke to their ideas of a calm, serene space.
“You want to walk in and feel your second home wrap its arms around you and invite you to sit and relax, melting away stress so you can regenerate and renew your energy,” Fielder said.
For Kanan’s space, Fielder used graphic patterns and tons of texture for accents while sticking to a neutral scheme for the walls and furniture. The rooms need a little pop of sexy for The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital star, so Fielder gave it an extra dose of texture from her line of faux fur accessories.
“I am a huge fan of Kathy’s faux fur pieces. They are exceptionally beautiful while appealing to all of us who support ethical treatment of animals,” said Kanan. “Since the pieces are made of faux fur, there is no animal rights issues.”
Fielder has a line of luxury bedding available at Neiman Marcus, Horchow, Rue La La, One Kings Lane, and Overstock.com called the Isabella Collection and manufactures everything right here in Dallas and the US. You could easily create a serene, luxurious nest from her wares.
“After you have envisioned your getaway style, the most important thing to remember is that this home will be your gateway to relax, unwind, and entertain. Keeping that in mind, make sure you plan out the things that are most inviting to you,” Fielder said. “If you love to sleep in, then make sure you have the best bedding you can afford. If you love to cook, stock the kitchen so you are able to conjure up some of your best new recipes. It really is the little details thought out beforehand that make all the difference, and it seems the smaller details tend to fall into place at this juncture.”
We can’t help but agree, and we hope Fielder is available to design our ideal getaway spaces! If you want a daily fix of high style, be sure to subscribe to Kathy’s lifestyle blog.
