The flies are tied, the tackle box organized, the waders retrieved from storage, and ready to go! We’re wishbooking Whitefish real estate for a lovely fishing retreat in the woods of the cool environs of Montana.

The small town of Whitefish (population 6,357 per the 2010 census) headquartered on the south end of Whitefish Lake in Northwest Montana, offers splendid fishing in the Lake and the nearby river and streams. It’s not far from access to snow sports and summer activities at popular Whitefish Mountain Resort. The area is surrounded by forested state and national parks, including one of the country’s most famous— Glacier National Park — situated a half hour away. Whitefish’s average high temperature in July and August is 80 degrees; the low, 50. It’s an outdoor lover’s paradise.

Here’s a picture book-pretty cabin, 1815 Four Wheel Drive, which sits on a meticulously landscaped nearly-one-acre lot. Located near the western shore of the lake, it’s just a 10-minute drive to the town center where charming restaurants, shops, and cultural amenities cluster near a historic railway depot. About a mile wide and seven miles long, Whitefish Lake is one of the largest in Montana and is home to large mountain whitefish, bull trout, rainbow, and northern pike, caught mainly by trolling with spin gear. It’s a popular spot for sailing and waterskiing, too. This cozy cabin with modern amenities shares lakefront access, just a hop, skip and a jump from its door.

The 1,693-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath house has a pretty drive-up:

Methinks a gardener lives here and the terroir is cooperative. The landscaping is beautiful.

A porch with a swing is a great place to sit and take in the view:

Here’s a close-up of the detail of the entry’s exterior:

And the backyard with a plush lawn and raised garden:

Inside, the kitchen fits the rustic vernacular but is quite modern. There are lots of windows to take in these scenic views:

There’s everything you’d need to cook up a nice trout meal and entertain guests:

Below is the living area — snug, yes, but at this house you’ll want to be spending most of your time out-of-doors.

Wish we were there!
