One Last Gasp of Summer — in Saint Simons Island

saint simons Summer vacation is winding to a close, but when we found this beach cottage on Saint Simons Island, Georgia, we knew we could always start thinking about next summer.

We don’t often hear about the gorgeous properties located in Georgia’s East Coast, but for folks looking for a beach home without the crowds, Realtors in the know will frequently point them in that direction.

Although Tybee Island and Jekyll Island tend to be more well-known, Saint Simons has a lot to offer — marshlands, waterways, beaches, shopping, golfing, fishing, kayaking, and dolphin watching can easily fill summer days.

It’s also home to the historic Saint Simons Lighthouse, which is still in operation as an active aid to navigation for ships entering the Saint Simons Sound. Built in 1872, it replaced the original lighthouse built in 1810 (which wa burned by Confederate troops to prevent it being used by Union soldiers).

The historical shelter we found for this week isn’t as old as the lighthouse, but it does feature all the charm of 1930s architecture.

“Very spacious authentic 1930s beach house only one block to the beach with superb ocean views from all front rooms,” is how listing agent Ruth Heyward Beall of Signature Properties Group described this beach cottage.

The home was renovated and lovingly restored in 1999, and you can see it in the heart of pine walls, ceilings, and floors (some painted, some stained).

Inside, tasteful furnishings (which can be purchased separately) let a prospective buyer envision a life spent beachside in a less hectic, less developed area with true relaxation in mind.

Outside, Louisiana-style double porches create the perfect places to take in the sounds of the beach and the cool breezes kicked up off the water, and a privacy fence and lush landscaping invite visitors even further outside.

A sunroom for rainy days still puts you in an outdoor frame of mind, and the extensive rear deck just beyond it will become someone’s outdoor dining space.

The four-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath, 2,894 square foot home is listed for $1,099,000.
