Warm Weather, Golfing, and More in Scottsdale, Arizona

This Scottsdale, Arizona, condo boasts waterfront and desert views, but has a budget-friendly price.

Editor’s Note: Recently, MoneyWise revealed its list of the 40 most frugal and friendly places to retire. In a bid to provide an idea of what housing inventory is available in these cities and towns, we’re taking a look at listings in each of the cities on the list.

Not everyone can spend $1 million or more on a second home, even if it’s with the idea that eventually you’ll retire there. So when MoneyWise’s list of 40 places to retire that are more budget-friendly came out, we were curious — what kind of homes could you find in these towns?

We decided to take a look. Number 40 on the list? Scottsdale, Arizona. Just east of Phoenix, the town of about 200,000 or so is home to a lot of golfing, a lot of shopping, and warm weather pretty much year around.

It’s also (for a few months every year) a baseball lover’s paradise, since the Major League Baseball spring training camps of the Cactus League are sprinkled around Arizona, with two in Scottsdale proper.

“This community of a little more than 200,000 people offers gorgeous warm weather, beautiful parks, and immaculate streets,” MoneyWise explained. “Its proximity to Phoenix makes it a fantastic place for shopping, restaurants, and entertainment.”

“Owing in a large part to the year-round arid weather, Scottsdale and Phoenix are home to world-famous golf courses,” the story continued. “Healthcare in Scottsdale is known to be excellent. It should be noted that the Mayo Clinic has one of its three major branches in Scottsdale.”

So what did we find in Scottsdale? We found some frugal, some fairly frugal, and some not really frugal at all options. Today, we’ll look at two homes in two different price points, so you can get an idea of what your second home dollar can buy.

Price: $284,900
Yes, you’re still in the middle of the desert even if you have a waterfront condo. This one-bedroom, one-bath condo in the Scottsdale Bay Club packs in some gorgeous views from the balcony overlooking the lake.

In fact, listing agent Lisa Leopold Russ with Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty said that you can take in water, mountain, and sunrise and sunset views from this condo, which was completely remodeled three years ago.

And even better — it’s available fully furnished (including the linens, decor, art,  and dishes) and turnkey, so you can truly lock and leave.

In the kitchen, granite slab countertops and stainless steel appliances will make it easy to throw together carefree meals on the fly. The bathroom has a frameless walk-in shower and Carrara marble finishes.

In the living room, a fireplace serves as a focal point, and wood-look porcelain tile flooring creates an easy-to-care-for, yet markedly unfrugal look.

And outside, community pools, workout facility, clubhouse, biking/walking path, spa, and tennis courts mean that virtually all of your daily recreational needs are provided for.

Price: $575,000
This three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath home sits in the golf course community of Legend Trail, on a lot that backs the golf course and desert.

And even more awesome? You have your pick of three pools to beat back the desert heat, and one of them comes with the house.

And since the home has three bedrooms, plus an office/library that could also serve as bunk space in a pinch, it’s also a great home for hosting family holidays.

Inside, the kitchen, wet bar and bathrooms were updated recently with granite counters, new cabinets and new sinks. The family room, dining/living room and master bedrooms also have new carpet.

Two fireplaces grace the home — one in the family room, and one in the master. The split-bedroom floorplan puts the formals and the master on one wing, and the two guest bedrooms and office on another.

And those three pools? The one in the backyard includes a spa, and is part of a backyard oasis that includes a built-in barbecue and a kiva fireplace.

Nearby, two more pools, a spa, a workout center, and tennis courts are available at the community center.
