Editor’s Note: Recently, MoneyWise revealed its list of the 40 most frugal and friendly places to retire. In a bid to provide an idea of what housing inventory is available in these cities and towns, we’re taking a look at listings in each of the cities on the list.

Not everyone can spend $1 million or more on a second home, even if it’s with the idea that eventually you’ll retire there. So when MoneyWise’s list of 40 places to retire that are more budget-friendly came out, we were curious — what kind of homes could you find in these towns?

Last week, we looked at the 27th city on the list — Charleston, South Carolina. This week, we look at Springfield, Missouri, and found three great homes — all for less than $350,000.

“Springfield is an inexpensive place to live: the median income is around $34,000, and rent can be less than $700 per month,” MoneyWise said. “Median home prices come in at just over $100,000.”

“You will see some snow in the winter and summers can be hot, but not extreme. The city has three hospitals, as well as extensive home care offerings.”

Adorable Historic Cottage At Median Price

Price: $100,000

Price just slightly lower than the median home price in Springfield, this 1910 cottage is a great option for the downsizer who still wants a bit of room when the grandkids or friends come to visit.

While 952 square feet may sound small, this three-bedroom, two bath home packs a lot of living into the space thanks to a clever floorplan that leaves the living and dining room open and flexible.

The surprisingly spacious kitchen has loads of cabinet and counter space, and if that’s not enough, the mudroom provides more storage space, and laundry space.

Both bathrooms have been updated, and currently, one of the bedrooms upstairs is being used as a master closet — an option that the next homeowner could certainly continue with.

The home is listed by Dan Holt with Keller Williams Realty – Greater Springfield.

Midcentury Ranch in Southern Hills

Price: $239,900

Our second option, located in the popular Southern Hills neighborhood, is a 1962 Midcentury Ranch that has been the beneficiary of some charming updates.

The three-bedroom, two bath home has 1,872 square feet of living space, making it a nice compromise for those who want downsize from a larger family home, but still want the space to entertain houseguests.

The home boasts new flooring, a newer and more open floor plan, new cabinets and granite in the kitchen, and new lighting, fixtures and paint throughout the home.

By combining two bedrooms, the sellers created a generous master suite with a huge closet, and another large bedroom on the other side of the house can serve as guest space or an office. The sellers also added a third car garage.

Located on a cul de sac, the home is also close to walking trails, entertainment, and shopping.

It is listed by Shirley Franklin with Franklin Realtors.

Newer Home With Lake Views

Price: $325,000

Our last option is a 2014 one-story Contemporary home with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and 2,362 square feet of living space, plus a deck overlooking a portion of a lake view.

The common areas benefit from an open and airy floor plan and hardwood floors, and the kitchen becomes the heart of the home with its stainless steel appliances, granite, and mosaic tile backsplash.

An extremely spacious master suite features a tray ceiling, large bathroom with dual vanities, soaking tub and separate shower, and a large closet.

The three other bedrooms are also generously sized, too.

The home is listed by Adin Baban with The Realty Group.
