Feeling Fresh, or Salty? 20 Best U.S. Beaches

Traverse City, Michigan (Photo courtesy traversecity.com)

While many assume living near a beach is unaffordable, WalletHub recently found that of the 192 cities they looked at when compiling their 2019 Best Beach Towns list, many actually are quite doable.

“To determine the most livable beachside communities, WalletHub compared 192 cities across 62 key metrics,” WalletHub said. “The data set ranges from housing costs to share of for-sale waterfront homes to quality of beach water.”

The study offered up 10 ocean beach towns, and 10 lake beach towns. Of the two categories, Naples, Florida, and Traverse City, Michigan, came in first in the former and the latter.

Hamptons Beach You Don’t Have To Share

If you are not feeling the whole idea of sharing your beach, and you have 128 million quarters to rub together simultaneously, Mansion Global has a gorgeous property set along Surfside, Bridgehampton, New York’s, ocean-facing road.

The listing has 187 feet of ocean frontage, which includes a pristine sandy beach. Also included in the outdoor living space is a spa bath, shaded pergola, pool, bar, two grills, and a pizza oven.

If you tire of the beach (what?), the interior of the home feels light and airy thanks to large proportions and other touches.

“The large, raised ‘outdoor living room’ with its ocean-facing pool has the dual perks of being a relaxing family space and a great spot for hosting large gatherings. (Private pool and house parties are a big part of the Hamptons’ social scene.),” the article explains.

Choose Your Own Adventure on the Saronic Islands

Hydra? Poros? Aegina? Or maybe Agistri or Spetses? It can be hard to pick which island to head to first if you’re visiting the Saronic Islands in Greece, but Tripsavvy.com came up with a guide to help prioritize.

“It’s hard to choose a Greek island vacation with more than 6,000 to choose from (even if only 227 are inhabited),” Tripsavvy writes. “And while ferry services are excellent and some islands have airports, they’re spread out over 4,660 miles, making island hopping an arduous task. For example, a ferry from Athens Piraeus port to Crete or Rhodes can take up to 11 hours.”

Because of that, island hopping might sound impossible, but the travel guide makes the excellent suggestion — why not head to the Peloponnese region of mainland Greece, where the Saronic Islands (an hour or so from the mainland) allow for plenty of adventures among the five islands that make up the archipelago.
