Best of 2020: Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Key West Conch House

Share News:

We bet you haven’t seen a Key West stunner quite like this one.

[Editor’s Note: This year has been a decade, right? So many things happened, lots of things were postponed, and houses continued to sell despite it all. While the SecondShelters..com team takes a hot minute this holiday season to recharge the ol’ Energizers, we’re serving up our very favorite stories from 2020. Enjoy!]

Amy: We feature a lot of celebrity homes in our “What Can I Get?” but this year’s best of feature is one for the books. One part quirky, one part cool, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s pirate-themed Key West conch house is worth a second look. Enjoy!

The pirate-themed conch house, by legendary NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. and interior designer wife Amy, is a piece of Key West history made new. And the pirate-themed design makes the listing that much sweeter! Let’s take a peek around.

Historic Key West Conch House With Eye-Catching Upgrades

The Key West estate, currently listed for $3.7 million, is in the island’s Old Town neighborhood and is steeped in what the listing calls, “a rich and mysterious history.”

Upon first glance, we are in awe of the home’s colorful façade. But it’s the eye-catching upgrades throughout that steal the show. In fact, this property is one of many projects the Earnhardts have taken on with a singular vision – to restore old conch houses to their former glory.

An Homage To The Pirate Days Of Yore

This one, spanning 3,306 square feet, is an homage to the island’s pirate days of yore. And it’s a bountiful retreat after a long day out on the beach. The gracious island home blends Victorian and tropical architecture seamlessly, while giving Key West buyers a sense of whimsy and fun. And the location can’t be beat! It sits mere minutes from Mallory Square and the trendy shops and bars along Duval Street.

Civil-War Era Treasure Packed With Modern Flair

The Key West treasure was originally built in 1863 during the Civil War era. It retains much of its original character but with tongue-in-cheek upgrades for modern day. This includes a kitchen resembling the interior of a pirate ship complete with authentic ship’s wheel for dramatic effect. There is also an inviting guest house and plenty of space for umbrella drinks amidst a canopy of Palms.

But There’s More Than Meets The Eye At This Key West Abode

The five-bedroom, three-full-and-two-half-bathroom retreat has a secret hatch door that allows you to spy on people in the parlor. There is also a custom pirate-theme bar and massive sparkling pool for fun in the sun.

According to TopTenRealEstateDeals.com, “The swimming pool is huge by Key West standards over two fathoms deep. For non-pirates, that would be 14-feet, a perfect place to hone one’s scuba-diving skills. Across the cultivated-jungle garden is a guest house and above the pool on the second-story wrap-around balcony is a gate where walking the plank into the water below is a real possibility. When the six-toed cat appears on the front porch, it can be easily returned to Ernest Hemmingway’s house down the street, and as a reward, stop by Sloppy Joes for a lazy-afternoon gin and tonic.”

Sounds like the perfect Key West escape to us! Who’s in?

Bob and Debbie Cardenas with Ocean Sotheby’s International Real Estate have listed 708 Eaton Street, Key West, Florida for $3.7 million.
